"In my art, theme, subject and materials are driven by and
subordinate to the materials and the creative process;
it is the process that is the ultimate creator."
Marsh Rosenthal
As a Mixed Media artist, the collages, assemblages and sculptural compositions I create are inspired by organic and manufactured "found objects" including scrap metal, wood, cement, plastic, and a wide variety of paper products including sand and tar paper, cardboard packing materials, and hand made papers from international markets.
These items are then affixed to painted raw canvas or other hard surface materials.
INFLUENCES
A life long passion in art history, with strong influence from the Edo period in Japanese art, and studies in ceramics at Cypress College in Orange County, California with Yvette Shaak, and ceramic sculptors Charlene Felos, Robert Hardy, and Arden Lanham, reinforce the compositional integrity in my work.
Other major influences include the visionary art of Picasso and Ernst; architects: modern pioneer Frank Lloyd Wright* and contemporary Frank Ghery; “Combine” iconoclast Robert Rauschenberg; collage artist Barbara Kruger, and existential Ceramicist Peter Voulkos. In metal and mixed media: Spain’s Eduardo Chillida; Northern Californian Richard Serra; and Idywilld, Californian Dore Capitani, have inspired me and provided some of the fodder for my creative process.
EXHIBITS AND CURRENT PROJECTS
My art has exhibited in both group shows in Orange County and the Temecula Valley, where I reside, including two "one person shows", and one international group show "Friendship Beyond Borders" which traveled in Europe in 2006.
